Marcus Elliot is a multifaceted artist, known for his roles as a saxophonist, composer, improviser, and educator, anchored in the vibrant city of Detroit. His remarkable talent has garnered recognition as a 2020 Kresge Artist Fellow, bestowed upon him by Kresge Arts in Detroit. Currently, Marcus serves as the director of the University of Michigan's Creative Arts Orchestra and imparts his expertise as an Instructor of Jazz Saxophone at Wayne State University.
Critics and audiences alike have been captivated by Marcus's compositions and improvisations, with the New York Times describing his music as "convincing and confident," while the Detroit Free Press identifies him as the embodiment of the "next generation of jazz." Marcus takes the helm of several Detroit-based bands, including the Marcus Elliot Quartet, Clockwork, Balance, and Beyond Rebellious. He is an integral part of the Shigeto Live Ensemble and proudly holds the title of Fellow within the Geri Allen Gathering Orchestra. Marcus's dedication to the musical community is evident through his co-founding of the nonprofit Polyfold Musical Arts Collective.
